Long before Dan ran a rig of his own, he spent years learning this valley from an old-timer who'd worked the ground for decades — a driller who taught Dan more than technique. He taught him to read the land itself: the lay of a property, the plants that grow where water sits close, the kind of ground that holds and the kind that doesn't. It's called dowsing, or water witching if you want the old name for it, and it's been practiced by drillers and diggers for about as long as people have needed to find water in dry country.

Dan doesn't claim it's science, and he won't tell you it's magic either. What he'll tell you is that he still walks every property before he ever brings out the equipment, same as his mentor did, same as drillers before him did going back generations. Whatever it is he's doing out there, it's been part of well over 200 successful wells across some of the driest, most unpredictable ground in Southern California.
